Six ‘Standards’ were built in the NZR Hutt Workshops in 1938 and 1939, each with a semi-streamlined design featuring slanting ends. Each car had two compartments, the larger with 36 seats (second class) and the smaller with 12 seats (first class) or 16 seats (second class).

Wairarapa railcars entered service in 1936 specially designed to be used on services between Wellington and the Wairarapa district. This route included a section which went over a mountain range which included the then famous Remutaka Incline.

35 Twinset railcars were designed by the Drewry Car Company and built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BCRW) in the early – mid 1950s along with many NZR shunt locomotives.

The Silver Fern Railcars entered service in December 1972 on the Wellington to Auckland daylight run having been ordered by the former New Zealand Railways specifically for this role.
